This new series of gothic books is the first to treat the genre in its many inter-related aspects and show how the taste for the medieval and the sublime gave rise to a perverse taste for terror and horror and how that taste became the sensibility of the modern age, changing our attitudes to such diverse areas as the nature of the artist, the meaning of drug abuse and the concept of the self.
GOTHIC will be essential reading for students, scholars and aficionados and a multi-volume guide to the gothic sensibility from its origins in the eighteenth century through to reconsiderations of Frankenstein and Dracula and the worlds of Hannibal Lecter, zombie plagues and the fetish delights of gothic fashion, music and games. The series will explain the international dimension of gothicism and deal in detail with German, French and American authors; it will also demonstrate the development of the genre in every area of art including original research on gothic theatre, spiritualism, ‘ghost seeing’ and spirit photography and the impact of penny-dreadful authors on the genre, whilst also including a host of forgotten or ignored authors and their biographies.
